Without the perfected scenery or lovely cinematography of the recent Pride and Prejudice, Emma stands on Gwyneth Paltrow’s own very skinny two feet with enough personality and warmth—not to mention those inimitable Jane Austen ingredients of gossip, snobbery, shameless romance, and forgiving contempt for most members of both sexes—to satisfy even the most urbane progressives among us.
